About Me:
I live with my partner, two kids and one large dog in Dublin. I teach and do research in Computer Science during the week, and go Orienteering at the weekends.

I like reading science fiction and watching sci-fi movies. I am also a great fan of music, liking bands and singers from way back in the 1970s, to modern bands. I did play in a band some years ago, as a drummer. I still bang the drums in the attic from time to time.
I also like outdoor activities, such as hill-walking, rock climbing, and my current favourite: Orienteering!

Computers are used to control a lot of moving and flying machines. A lot of work is done to ensure the computer programs are safe. My research looks at using mathematics to make it easier to do this.
-
My Typical Day:
I wake up, walk the dog, have breakfast and then cycle into College. Some of the time I do teaching, and the rest I spend doing my research.

I teach two courses to students doing Computer Science or Computer Engineering. The subjects I teach give them the knowledge they would need to get involved in my research. My research involves having ideas about how to develop new maths to help prove that programs are correct. My experiments involving taking real programs and seeing if the new math makes it easier. Most of my recent work has been looking at software used by the European Space Agency (ESA) to run their satellites. I also have a number of final-year students doing projects with me to help in this area. For many of these students it’s their first step to becoming an engineering researcher!
I also go for walks with Murphy, our dog

What I'd do with the prize money:
I’d use it to fund school visits. I’d like to explain how there are many different engineering skills needed for Space – it’s not just Rocket Science!

I’d use the money to develop presentation materials, and interesting handouts.
