My work is about discovering what breaks in cells, and how that leads to normal cells to become cancer (i focus on breast cancer).
My group is also working on making a new drug that we hope will one day be used to treat cancer, with the goal of making people live longer.

My Typical Day:
I spend some time teaching my students, working in the lab, and writing.

My typical day includes teaching undergraduates classes on how cell talk to them selves, and how cells repair thier DNA when it is damages.
I also spend time doing and writing up our research, to share our findings with other scientists all over the world- the more we know together- the further we go together.

What I'd do with the prize money:
I would bring school students to a sceintifc meeting and ask them to join in and tweet (instagram) about it.

I would love to use the money to get a group of students to organise live meetings (eg twitter, or instragram) with some Irish scientists (some here, some overseas) and talk to them about their research.
And have those students run the talks/meetings, asking questions that are important to you all, and get as many young people to come and listen to the talks and ask questions as possible- to learn just how exciting science is!
-
Education:
I went to a state school, and then university in Australia. I did my PhD at a medial research institute linked to a hospital, interacting with medical staff and scientists.
I then moved to Ireland for more research training, and then did a masters in teaching (university) as I moved into the academic side of science.
