James Brown is the latest winner, after receiving the most votes from students! He wins €500 to spend on more science engagement activities.
Here’s what he had to say about his victory:

I’m incredibly excited to have been voted this term’s winner of I’m Scientist, which really caps off what was an absolutely fantastic experience. This activity is a wonderful way to allow me to directly connect with lots of students from all over the country, and to answer their questions about what we do as cancer researchers, why we do it, and how exciting a career it can be. Â
Talking with the students gives me such energy, and really makes me appreciate what it is about this job that I love, and reminds me that it truly is a fantastic and exciting career. Their questions are so interesting, and really makes me think about aspects of the job that we don’t often stop to really appreciate often.
The students asked very insightful and interesting questions, both about the job and about cancer in general, and I think they really appreciate learning about us as scientists and as people- a perfect example of “if you can see it, you can be it” which is really highlighted by the diversity of all the wonderful scientists that took part.
I expect that I will see some of these students in my university classes in the next few years, and it inspires me that the next generation of insightful and intelligent young scientists is well on their way to joining our ranks.
I think this I’m a Scientist outreach initiative is incredibly valuable in reminding the public, through the students, that scientific advances and fundamental truths underpin our modern world – from advances in molecular medicine improving cancer survival rates, to leaps in computing and how we use that for research, and allows the students to see that being a part of this is something that everyone can achieve.
I hope we can keep inspiring them to remember that science is the key to solving the world’s biggest challenges—and their curiosity today will change the future tomorrow!
